Week At The Beach

It has been a while since we've done a blog post...did you miss us? Well, we've been at the beach with no computer access, and we have lots to share.

We drove back to Atlanta from Knoxville the day after Christmas, and then we left early Saturday morning for Fort Myers Beach, Florida. It takes about 10 hours from our house, but the long trip didn't bother me since I slept almost the entire way in my bed. Maddux sat in Mommy's lap and stayed awake the entire trip. We made a pit stop in Valdosta, and we made a new friend...a shih tzu named Buddy.

On Sunday, everyone (except me and Maddux) went out fishing on the boat, and Mommy caught some fish right away.

While they fished, four porpoise circled the boat.

Daddy caught some fish, too.

There was one fish that Daddy caught that jerked off the hook before he could get it in the boat, but it left something on the hook, which Mommy thought was its teeth. Papaw said it was actually the gill plate...Mommy and Mamaw said it did look just like a set of teeth hanging off the hook. They were laughing so hard they forgot to take a picture of the "teeth". In Mommy's defense, Papaw did just say that all fish in Florida have teeth.

The next day everyone (except me and Maddux) went to Sanibel Island. There is a shopping center there with birds, and Mommy couldn't resist taking Papaw's picture next to a bird that was named after him.

After they got back, Daddy fished off the dock. Maddux does NOT like to be left inside while Daddy is outside. He cried so loud Daddy could hear him from the dock.

Whenever anyone was outside, this was the position you could find me and Maddux.

This shrimp is one of many that gave its life so we could fish.

On Tuesday, Mommy and Mamaw walked down to the beach and went out on the pier.

We stayed behind with Daddy because we all know what happened last year when we went for a walk on the beach...sand fleas! Well, it turns out we got fleas anyway. We don't know what is up with Florida and fleas, but we could really do without them.

After Mommy and Mamaw got back from the beach, everyone (except me and Maddux...are you sensing the pattern that we are) was planning on going out fishing. Unfortunately, the boat wouldn't start. Last year, the car broke down, this year the boat broke down, and both years FLEAS...we think Florida may be cursed!

Papaw and Daddy worked on the boat a long time, but they couldn't get it to work so Daddy decided to fish off the dock and Papaw fished off the back of the boat. While they were fishing, two birds blocked them in so they could steal their fish.

These birds have been hanging around the dock for several years so they have names. The white one on the roof is Egbert, and the grey one on the ground is George.

We unfortunately never got the boat motor fixed, but we could use the trolling motor to putter around and fish a little. Mommy and Daddy were able to catch a couple more fish.

While we were in Florida, we also celebrated Mommy's 36th birthday on New Year's Eve. Of course, Maddux and I didn't get to go to the birthday dinner, but we helped Mommy open her presents.

Here we are helping.

On Thursday, our last day there, they went out for one last fishing trip. Mommy is sitting in the Captain's chair like she is driving, but she isn't actually doing anything since the motor is broken.

Papaw is actually controlling the boat from that little contraption on the front called a trolling motor.

Daddy caught this weird looking fish...we don't know what kind it is.

After they got back, we got one final bath in the hopes that we would remove any lingering fleas, and then we hit the road back to Atlanta. Mamaw and Papaw stayed one more night, but they spent the night with us on Friday night.

We had a good time (except the fleas and baths), but we are glad to be home. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Houston for letting us stay out there house again!

Hello Maddux & Bella, I just found your post through my Google Alerts of Sanibel posts.

How nice you were able to come to our area on vacation and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. You two are surely beautiful Yorkies. I have a Great Grand Dog, a teacup yorkie. Her name is Katy Bug. You can see her on my Camera Critters Blog.

I sure looks like you kept your Mommy and Daddy well entertained, as well as the Grandparents.

I hope you get to come back to Sanibel Island soon! Best of the new year to you both and your family.
